After School Programs :: JA Company Program®

The JA Company Program helps young people appreciate and better understand the role of business in the economy by allowing students with the support and guidance of a business volunteer to organize and operate an actual business enterprise.  

 

During the academic year 2013-2014, the JA Company Program was delivered to over 1,000 students from 60 secondary schools in Trinidad and Tobago.

 

The program targets FORM FOUR students between the ages of 14 to 17. 

 


Program Description 


Students are placed in groups (i.e. student companies) with an estimated 18-25 students in each company.

 

They will then be required to purchase shares in their company, which are non-legal and sell for a minimum of $25. This share purchase will allow the student to obtain ownership in the company and the ability to elect its company's executive team which include a President, Deputy President and Vice Presidents of Marketing, Finance, Production and Human Resource.  

 

Each JA Company will select the product or service it will offer. To stimulate ideas, JA provides a list of product options. Many successful JA companies identify needs within their schools or communities and develop products and/or services to meet those needs.

 

The duration of the program is 21 weeks. The business volunteer will play an active role in conducting the first 7 meetings. During this period the students will accomplish the following tasks:

 

  • Elect an executive management team
  • Establish company by-laws
  • Identify a target market
  • Create a market survey
  • Conduct market research
  • Select a product
  • Select a company name, mission statement and values
  • Create a business plan for each department

 

From meeting 8 onwards, the company’s executive management team assumes leadership responsibilities.  Training is provided to members of the executive management team. Students will be required to form partnerships with suppliers of their raw materials and develop sales contracts with various clients to sell their products or services.

 

Each student will be required to adequately staff the company by serving as responsible management team members or employees. While a selected few (the executive team) manage the company, each student is assigned a specific job duty/responsibility and has the opportunity to actively participate in its operation.


At the end of the program, students will be required to liquidate their companies, pay salaries and wages to their workers and publish an Annual Report.

COMMITTMENT: Once a Week 

 

LOCATIONS: Port of Spain, Chaguanas, San Fernando, Trincity and Mayaro. 

 

DAYS:

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in Port of Spain and San Fernando.

 

Mayaro (Fridays only)

 

Chaguanas (Mondays only)

 

Trincity (Fridays only) 

 

TIME: 3:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M.

 

COST: $ 200
